Alcaeus steeled himself to the task at hand. His gaze briefly moved to the throne itself. The Rising Sun Throne was named as such for the carved half sun that connected the Shah and Khanum’s seats. The delicate rays looked more like imposing golden thorns to Alcaeus. Once, there had been a matching throne for the Temple, the thrones made for the Great Prophet’s sons. Centuries ago, one of Alcaeus’s predecessors had deemed it inappropriate for even a high priest to sit on a throne, and it had been destroyed. Now, seeing Merikh and Loralee sitting upon this one, Alcaeus couldn’t help but wonder if the Rising Sun Throne had outlived its truth. If it had turned into something blasphemous and distasteful.
